Once upon a time, in spring 2000 to be exact, a merry band of
system managers from the Department of Electrical Engineering at the
Swiss Federal Institute of Technology set out on a mission, to apply
their well tempered Unix knowledge to Windows 2000. Against all odds,
they came back, mission accomplished (sort of) and were still able to
tell their story.

The plan was, to create a fully automated, server based, Windows
2000 setup. Fully automated in this context means two things:
Basic tasks like, Client Installation, Server Setup,
Application Deployment, Hotfix application and Account management
happen without continous user intervention.
The Setup is reproducible. This means that the whole system should
constructed automatically from basic components.
We did achieve the first goal in all areas but the server setup. The
second goal was more difficult but we still managed to get there
often.

This website is structured into several main toppics. You can see them on the navigation bar on the left side of the screen.

We wrote a number of scripts
when we created our windows 2k setup. Here you can download them.

Unfortunately we were not able to achieve our goals in all
areas. Mostly because of the abysmal Admin APIs and superficial
Documentation for managing Windows 2k. But read on! |

We only got to the point we are
now because we were able to draw from a number of great
resources. Both on the web and in print. |
