Archiving

A central archiving system is accessible to all institutes of the department. The system is called Jabba (jabba.ee.ethz.ch). The system can be used for near-line data storage of user data as well as backup device.

Hardware

The storage system consists of a Sun Fire V880, 2.8 TB disk as cache and of a IBM 3494 robot with 4 IBM 3592 FC tape drives. The capacity of the library is currently about 336TB and is easily expandable. The data transfer rate of the tape drives is 30 - 100MB/sec. Jabba is connected with GBit Ethernet ETH LAN.

Software

Jabba runs SAM-FS (Storage and Archive Manager File System) from Sun Microsystems. SAM-FS is a file system that copies files from on-line (harddisk) to other media such as tape libraries. This happens automatically and fully transparent to the users. SAM-FS implements some special user commands.
